The Communications Specialist will serve as communications business partner supporting activities for AkzoNobel’s Coatings business units in the North American market. This includes collaborating with regional marketing teams on integrated marketing communications activities, developing and executing strategic plans to promote the company’s products, services and industry leadership positions with key consumer, business, trade, sustainability and other relevant media outlets. In addition, the position will support external and internal communications for all business units operating in the North America region including the positioning and profiling of senior executives, the global corporate communications agenda and initiatives to support business growth.
The role will be based in Chicago, IL, the North American regional headquarters for AkzoNobel. The role will report to the Head of Communications for the Americas region.
The position requires a communications generalist and team player who has a proven track record in managing client relationships to develop successful B2B campaigns and external communication strategies. Keys to success in this position are a hands-on and digital savvy communications professional who will focus on execution to drive awareness of AkzoNobel in the region. A team player who can prioritize, plan and coordinate multiple business demands in line with the defined external communication strategies while collaborating with colleagues at numerous locations across the region. Position requires willingness to learn and work with the North American communications team supporting the diverse business areas of Marine, Protective, Yacht, Wood, Metal, Powder, Automotive and Specialty Coatings.
The position will also support social media strategies and content development as well as multimedia initiatives focused on telling our brand and product stories.
Coordinate the work process with selected vendor (external agencies) for executing media relations campaigns.

Job requirements/Candidate profile
- 3-5 years of previous experience in agency or corporate communications environment
- Bachelors’ degree (Communications, PR, Integrated Marketing Communications) or proven experience in these fields.
- Excellent writing skills
- Excellent oral communications skills
- Social media expertise
- Have an attention to project details, strong organizational skills and willingness to learn in a dynamic, diverse communications team
- Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and execute tasks efficiently based on business demands.
- Experience with B2B trade shows and customer events
- Experience collaborating with and managing agencies, free-lancers, and third party communication vendors
