"The culture of internal hiring is one of the things that’s great about working here – it provides the chance to take on all sorts of different challenges and grow both professionally and personally."
As a Project Manager in the Digital Marketing team, Avik Ganguly is responsible for making sure all our customers have a great experience when they interact with AkzoNobel on any of our apps and websites.
He does this by making sure our enterprise data – information on our products, colors, stores and pricing – is available and processed in the right way.
An expat based in the Netherlands, he started his career at AkzoNobel just three years ago as a Sourcing Analyst. In this role, he took data from spend on solvents and additives and used it to create meaningful insights to help the spend managers responsible for these areas make significant cost savings and improve efficiency.
Making the most of opportunities
“At AkzoNobel you have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects with different stakeholders and functions,” he explained. “The culture of internal hiring is one of the things that’s great about working here – it provides the chance to take on all sorts of different challenges and grow both professionally and personally.”
Last month Avik was also able to take on a totally different kind of challenge thanks to working for AkzoNobel – competing in a yacht race!
Race of the Classics – Young Professionals is a race between 23 classic sailing ships of all shapes and sizes, crewed by more than 600 young professionals from across a range of industries. Their challenge is to cross the North Sea from Rotterdam (NL), to Ipswich (UK) and then back to Amsterdam (NL) over four days.
Avik was bitten by the sailing bug when he got the opportunity to take part in the Sikkens Regatta in Sassenheim 2 years ago. “It was my first sailing experience and a very fun one too. During the event, I heard aspirational stories about Race of the Classics – Young Professionals so when my colleagues decided to enter this year and invited me to join them, I jumped at the chance!”
Since his Race of the Classics – Young Professionals experience was so enjoyable, Avik is considering pursuing sailing more seriously next summer. “I’m really glad I did it, it was such an enriching experience.”
Learning from the experience
One of the big takeaways from the race for Avik was learning how the right attitude makes a big difference. “We were 22 colleagues confined in a relatively small amount of space, all with different tasks and responsibilities. The energy and positive attitude everyone had throughout helped us work as one team and made the journey memorable and fun.”
Fun is something Avik feels is important to have in your job too: “My team has more than six nationalities working together. They’re open and friendly, which really helps for an expat like me. I personally believe people are one of biggest assets AkzoNobel has!”
