Three products manufactured by Akzo Nobel’s Marine and Protective Coatings business have won top awards handed out by the marine press in the United States.
Micron® 66™, Interthane® Plus and Toplac®—all marketed under the Interlux® brand name—were recognized by the editors of Power Boat Reports and Practical Sailor.
The newest bottom paint from Interlux, Micron 66 won top honors and was awarded the blue ribbon after last summer’s annual testing of 54 unique bottom paints.
“We are very excited about the independent tests from the editors,” said Bob Donat, vice president of marketing for Interlux. “It reconfirms our belief that Micron 66 will provide the boat owner with the cleanest, long-lasting antifouling protection possible.”
The product—which also won the 2003 National Marine Manufacturers Association Innovation Award—is the first new product on the market which uses patented self-polishing copolymer technology to provide long-lasting antifouling properties that, until now, were only available in tributyltin (TBT) based paints.
The other awards scooped by the company—both in the topside category—went to Toplac, which was named the best easy-to-use one-part paint, and Interthane Plus, which after the standard two-year test period emerged as the best two-part urethane.
Added Donat: “We are delighted with this independent confirmation of our Toplac and Interthane Plus products. Boat owners are looking for easy-to-use, long-lasting finishes and Toplac and Interthane Plus meet their needs.”
