Many of the communities around our site in Cikarang, Indonesia are experiencing the economic challenges that come with large-scale social restriction, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Colleagues from our local Marine, Protective and Yacht and Deco sites responded quickly to help out.
“During these difficult times, we need to support one another,” says Dola Balaji, the Cikarang Site Manager for our Deco business. “It’s important for us at AkzoNobel to contribute. Caring for people is not just part of our sustainability approach, which we call ‘People. Planet. Paint.’, but something we all feel as employees here in Cikarang. We wanted to find a way to help.”
To support the livelihoods of people in seven communities around Cikarang, several activities were organized through our Community Program. Taking place in cooperation with the community chief, the activities included the distribution of basic food essentials to about 500 families in need.
An event was held in the village of Sempu-Cikarang with local people and 20 employee volunteers. As part of the program, we symbolically handed over our assistance to the community chief and also raised awareness of health and safety protocols that will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community.
Working together with our neighbors during this challenging time turned out to be such an uplifting experience for everyone. Even our face masks couldn’t hide how we felt about it!
