Work Underway on Chemical Island

Construction work has started on a "chemical island" being built by Eka Chemicals to supply a new pulp mill in Brazil.

The EUR 50 million facility—which will include a sodium chlorate factory and a chlorine dioxide plant—is being built to provide chemicals for the new Veracel pulp mill, which is scheduled for start-up in 2005.

When complete, the mill will be the world’s largest single-line bleached eucalyptus pulp mill, with an output of around 900,000 tons per year.

In addition to the sodium chlorate factory and the chlorine dioxide plant for the mill, Eka Chemicals is also constructing an oxygen production unit and will also handle all the process chemicals required in the pulp production at Veracel.
