Sustainable building blocks

  • AkzoNobel provides coatings to many markets including transportation, construction, industrial and domestic markets.  Performance functions include anti-corrosion, anti-abrasion, antifouling, chemical resistance, strength and durability. The coatings are applied to many different substrates including steel, tinplate, concrete, aluminium, plastics, composites, masonry, plaster and wood
  • The world economy is dominated by a linear resource use model: make → use → dispose which uses very large quantities of non-renewable fossil resources for the production of fuels, chemicals, and materials, the extraction and use of which result in considerable environmental footprint
  • AkzoNobel is committed to being an industry leader in sustainability in terms of planet, people and profit, ensuring our businesses have positive economic, social and environmental impacts by doing radically more with less and providing customers sustainable solutions with at least the performance of existing products
  • In order to achieve this AkzoNobel would like economically competitive raw materials which offer lower environmental footprint than the current mainstream (for example, but not limited to carbon footprint)
  • AkzoNobel would like raw materials to be intrinsically sustainable e.g.  through use of  bio-based content which is produced in an environmentally responsible fashion and does not adversely impact other sustainability aspects such as biodiversity, water management or food markets
  • AkzoNobel would like to provide our customers with value-added sustainable solutions which either match existing  (petro-based) performance or have enhanced performance
  • The solution could come from any sustainable feedstock, e.g. agricultural feedstocks, the processing of organic waste streams etc.
  • Solutions need to be hard wearing and durable in both interior and exterior environments
We invite proposals for technology or processes that can achieve the above and approaches may include, but not be limited to:
  • Routes to existing building blocks (e.g. monomers) from renewable/bio-based starting materials
  • Access to new or alternative building blocks from renewable/sustainable feedstocks which provide competitive solutions to deliver performance (e.g. enhanced weathering, enhanced fouling control etc.)
  • Renewable/sustainable polymer binders
