Akzo Nobel plays colorful role in Olympics

PRESSRELEASE: Akzo Nobel’s Vivechrom business has played a major role in the preparations for the 2004 Olympic Games, being held in Greece.

Akzo Nobel’s Vivechrom business has played a major role in the preparations for the 2004 Olympic Games, being held in Greece.

As well as being used on the main Olympic Stadium, the Company also supplied products that were used to coat the Olympic velodrome, the rowing and canoeing center, the tennis and equestrian centers, the weightlifting and indoor wrestling halls, three soccer stadiums and the shooting and swimming centers.
Outside the sporting arenas, a number of brand new non-competitive venues have also been coated, such as the International Broadcast Center (IBC) and the main press center. It was the Olympic Village, however, which needed to be supplied with the bulk of the paint. Explained George Vouklaris, Vivechrom’s technical support manager: “More than 1,000 apartment blocks have been constructed at the site and we provided paint for both the exteriors and the interiors.”

Alongside the preparations for the Games themselves, the authorities in Athens have also been running the Athens New Image program, which aims to restore the facades of some of the city’s most neglected buildings. “The project has mostly involved coating old houses in Athens which haven’t been painted for around 40 or 50 years,” said Vouklaris. “We have provided them with our know-how and technical expertise in order to find the best ways to restore the old surfaces of the buildings, as well as supplying various products.”

As well as being the leading decorative paint brand in Greece, Vivechrom also commands a significant presence in markets in Cyprus, the Czech Republic and the Balkans.
