Cernobbio wins HSE Award

Facilities in Cernobbio (Italy), Houston, TX and Columbus, OH (both in the USA) were announced as winners of Coatings HSE Awards in their respective categories. Cernobbio was declared the overall winner.

Ove Mattsson, member of the Akzo Nobel board of management responsible for Coatings, handed out the awards at the Coatings Conference in Como, Italy. Cernobbio won in the category ‘management involvement and leadership in HSE issues’. The other two finalists in this category were Bergen op Zoom and Wapenveld, both located in the Netherlands.

Houston won in the ‘project approach’ category with Felling (UK) and Sege (Sweden) also named as finalists. Houston was awarded the prize for its HSE training project.

Columbus was winner in the ‘incentive’ category. The site was honored for its state-of-the-art facility and re-engineering designs that include ergonomic improvements in batchmaking, fill-off and tank cleaning. The other two finalists for this prize category were Somerset, NJ (USA) and Martorelles (Spain).

Selection of the finalists was made on the basis of leadership shown, the quality of their special projects, and adoption of best practices in HSE which were an example to others.
Candidates from all over Europe and North and South America were narrowed down to the nine finalists by an independent jury. There were 18 candidates in all.
As the overall winner Cernobbio received a check for 75,000 Euro, plus a certificate and golden pins in the shape of the Coatings Care leaf to be handed out to employees particularly involved in the HSE initiatives.
Each of the three category winners received a certificate to commemorate their special achievements in HSE.
