Just under half of the competing teams in this month’s grueling Atlantic Rowing Race are using Akzo Nobel products on their vessels in preparation for the notorious nautical challenge.

as being the ultimate test of mental and physical strength, the punishing 2,550 nautical mile trans-Atlantic race is staged every two years, with ten of the 2005 entrants using coatings supplied by International® Paint to build new or refurbish existing boats.

“The boats will be at sea for months, so weeds and barnacles can start to hinder performance if left to grow,” explained International Paint's UK sales support manager Boris Webber.

“Most crews have chosen to apply Interspeed Ultra antifouling as it provides a hard surface which allows the crews to scrub and keep the surface completely clear. This is essential as any hindrance can be critical and add days to the passage and even effect steering and stability.”

on November 27, a total of 28 teams from all over the world will compete in three classes (Solo, Pairs and Fours), starting from La Gomera in the Canary Islands and finishing in Antigua in the West Indies.

current record is held by a team from New Zealand, who in 2003 completed the distance in 40 days, five hours and 31 minutes.

year’s event is receiving added attention because one of the teams is made up of double Olympic gold medal rower James Cracknell and fellow Briton Ben Fogle, who is a well-known TV presenter in the UK.

the years, many of those who have taken part have had to be rescued after suffering from mental or physical collapse. Team combinations have included a mother and son, married couples and even a double convicted murderer and his parole officer.

(Severe weather conditions meant that the start of the race had to be rescheduled to November 30).
