More about International Protecting an icon Built to celebrate the new millennium, the showpiece London Eye is one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions. Situated by the River Thames and a stone’s throw from Big Ben, it has become an icon of the English capital. Up until 2006, it was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world. But it’s a far cry from the Ferris wheels of old. Made up of 32 sealed and air-conditioned capsules, each one has a capacity of 25 people. The wheel was constructed in sections which were floated up the Thames on barges and assembled lying flat on piled platforms in the river. Specific role During the various phases of its construction, AkzoNobel supplied five different coatings to help protect the landmark from the harsh effects of the English weather. Each one has a specific role to play in ensuring that the structure can cope with everything Mother Nature throws at it. They also keep it looking good. Instantly recognizable With a diameter of 120 meters, the London Eye has become the centerpiece of the capital’s New Year celebrations, making it one of the most instantly recognizable symbols of the city. Now more than 15 years old, AkzoNobel continues to provide protective coatings to maintain its appearance and protect the structure.
