Akzo Nobel has donated a large quantity of paint to a refurbishment project being carried out at the biggest mission hospital in Zambia.A total of eight pallets were shipped to St Francis’ Hospital recently after one of the company’s former employees—who has worked as a volunteer at the hospital in the past—got in touch to ask for help. Paint is quite expensive in Zambia and the 350-bed hospital—which is administered by the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches—is in urgent need of redecoration. “We need a lot of paint,” said a hospital spokesman. “There are many parts of the hospital itself, as well as the houses used for the employees, that need paint desperately.” Akzo Nobel supplied seven pallets of water-based paint (for indoor and outdoor use) and one pallet of solvent-based paint (for use on window frames and doors), all of which came from the Levis® range of products. Located in the Katete region, St Francis’ Hospital—which relies on support from volunteers and various aid organizations—serves as the hub for a network of small hospitals and clinics for an area with approximately one million people. The hospital also runs two nursing schools and has set up a special project to support AIDS orphans living in the surrounding area. (Released: April 5, 2005)
