Sweet Smell of Success For Expancel

An Akzo Nobel product is being used on the packaging of actress and singer Jennifer Lopez's Glow by J.Lo perfume.

Akzo Nobel’s Industrial Products business quite literally proved it had a nose for sniffing out new opportunities when it was awarded a contract to coat the packaging for a superstar’s new female fragrance.

When actress and singer Jennifer Lopez launched her Glow by J.Lo perfume, the box containing the bottle was given special attention by the manufacturers, who wanted to achieve a sophisticated, soft-touch texture.

So they turned to Industrial Products—which trades as Casco Products—and the company’s Expancel® microspheres, which were used to coat the packaging material and give it the desired “peach-touch.”

“It’s actually quite an old technology so we’re very happy that the product is still opening people’s eyes,” said Lars-Olof Svedberg, technical business development manager for Expancel.

“The product has been around since the early 1980s and one of its biggest applications is in paper and board production. But it was also developed to be used as a coating because it can give many different effects and this is how it was used on the packaging for the perfume.”

Expancel microspheres are small, spherical plastic particles consisting of a polymer shell encapsulating a gas. When the gas inside the shell is heated, it increases its pressure and the thermoplastic shell softens, resulting in a dramatic increase in the volume of the microspheres.

The product range includes both unexpanded and expanded microspheres and as well as paper and board, it is used in a huge number of other applications, such as wine corks, tennis balls printing inks, textiles and polyurethanes. New applications are also found every year.

Expancel’s use in the packaging for Glow by J.Lo is, however, one of its most high profile applications since being launched more than 20 years ago.
