The future of AkzoNobel

A world class business

Industries worldwide rely on our specialty chemicals to manufacture products such as paper, plastics, detergents and essentials for the construction, agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors.

Building on the dedication and engagement of our employees and our commitment to safety, sustainability and collaborative innovation, we have established a world class business with strong ties to our customers.
We are now entering a new chapter to further accelerate growth which involves separating the Specialty Chemicals business.

“We have the plan and the people to unleash our full potential and further grow our Specialty Chemicals business as a separate entity. This is an exciting opportunity for our business which will allow us to further support the growth of our customers.”
Thierry Vanlancker, Chief Executive Officer AkzoNobel

Achieving our full potential

Thanks to a balanced and resilient portfolio with leadership positions in high growth segments, we achieved record profitability in three consecutive quarters.
We will continue to improve our results through our growth strategy, building on three strategic levers.

  1. Continued operational excellence
We will continue to optimize our production processes and reduce non-product related spend. We target €150 million of fixed cost savings, offsetting inflation, and €100-150 million in working capital release through integrated business planning by 2020.
  2. Accelerating growth
By accommodating the growth of our key customers, we target to generate an additional €250 million in EBITDA by 2020.
  3. Separating Specialty Chemicals
Creating a focused, separate business will allow for further growth investments, targeting an additional €200 million in EBITDA by 2022.

Separation to create a focused chemicals business

Now is the right time to create two focused, high-performing businesses. This strategy will create substantial value for shareholders and all stakeholders while allowing Specialty Chemicals to accelerate its growth.

Project teams are in place to separate the Specialty Chemicals business. We are pursuing a dual-track process with active consideration of a separate listed entity or sale and expect the separation process to be completed by early 2018.
