Safety & Environment

An extensive program was carried out to study the influence of Dimethyl ether on the environment. In 1985 a report was published by the Dutch Ministry of the Environment and others. This report has been regularly updated and completed by new studies.
Dimethyl ether has been proven to not convert when chlorine radicals are present, and no peroxides form spontaneously. Dimethyl-ether evaporation from water in open systems is rapid, within hours, so Dimethyl ether does not present any risk to the aquatic environment. In closed vessel tests, it showed no toxic effect to fish up to concentrations of 4 gram per liter. Dimethyl ether is degraded by an photochemical reaction with OH radicals which results in degradation products carbon dioxide and water.

Toxicological Aspects
An extensive program was carried out to study the toxicology of Dimethyl ether. In 1985 a report was published by the Dutch Ministry of the Environment and others. This report has been regularly updated and completed by new studies.
Dimethyl ether is not mutagenic, carcinogenic or teratogenic. Dimethyl ether has shown a very low toxicity after acute as well as after chronic inhalation exposure. It only showed narcotic properties at very high levels.

Reach
Demeon ®D is in compliance with the REACH regulation. The completion of registration is the impressive result of a joint effort between AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals and the REACH consortia in which it participates.
