San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Features International® Coatings

San Francisco Bay Bridge Spans

International Paint is the sole supplier of protective coatings for the overhaul of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The work involves the complete replacement of the existing east span on the Oakland side, with coating of the new steelwork being carried out in China.

Following the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, which damaged a section of the east span, extensive studies were undertaken to determine whether California’s largest bridges were seismically safe. As a result, it was determined that the entire Bay Bridge required major seismic safety improvements. The west span has undergone a major seismic retrofit, while the east span is being completely replaced at a cost of more than $5 billion.

The steel structures are being built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. The company chose to use protective coatings from International Paint because they are manufactured to the same consistent quality worldwide regardless of location. The coating works for the first batch of structures was recently completed in Shanghai and were shipped to San Francisco on December 29, 2009.

A total of 400,000 litres of Interzinc® 22 Inorganic Zinc Rich Silicate and Interfine® 979 Acrylic Polysiloxane, supplied by AkzoNobel International Paint (Suzhou) Co., Ltd., will be used in this project. These quality offerings have the advantages of anti-corrosion, abrasion and impact resistance, gloss and colour retention that meet the rigorous requirements for the bridge. In addition, International Paint is offering a 20-year warranty for this project, which far exceeds the general industry practice.

A representative of Shanghai Zhenhua said: “The new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is a milestone project to us. In view of its high technical and engineering standards, we have imposed stringent requirements in selecting suppliers for this assignment and only work with those world-class companies. AkzoNobel International Paint has been providing us with quality solutions and professional advice which are of great value to this project.”

Jackson Chan, General Manager - Protective Coatings China for International Paint said: “It is our honour to be appointed as the sole supplier of protective coatings for this assignment. I would like to express our gratitude to Zhenhua for their trust in AkzoNobel. Our company has ample experience in supporting large-scale projects worldwide. We are well poised to share this expertise with leading Chinese companies like Zhenhua so that they can shine in the international markets.”

Jorn Seiero, President of AkzoNobel China added: “AkzoNobel is the world’s top coatings and paints company. This project is another good example of our commitment to deliver ‘Tomorrow’s Answers Today’.”

Coatings from AkzoNobel have been used in many high-profile projects in China such as the National Aquatics Centre (Water Cube), new CCTV building, Beijing South Railway Station, Beijing Olympic Games National Stadium (Bird’s Nest), Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Shanghai Grand Theater and Shanghai Stadium.
