Ton Büchner’s Profile
Ton Büchner will join the Board of Management of Akzo Nobel N.V. as Chief Executive Officer at the AGM 2012, succeeding Hans Wijers who will step down after nine years leading the company.
Ton, a Dutch national, is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sulzer Corporation, a position he has held since 2007. Sulzer is one of Switzerland’s leading publically-quoted, global industrial corporations, producing a range of industrial equipment from over 160 locations worldwide. It generated CHF3.2bn in sales in 2010 and employs over 14,000 people.
Ton is an engineer by training having earned his Master of Science in Civil Engineering at TU-Delft, Netherlands. He also has a Masters of Business Administration from IMD in Lausanne and has attended the Stanford Executive Programme in Palo Alto, California, USA.
His early career was spent in the oil and gas construction industry involving roles at Allseas Engineering in Europe and AkerKvaerner in South East Asia before joining Sulzer in 1994. Ton worked in a range of Sulzer operations until his appointment to the executive committee, as a divisional president, in 2001.
Ton is 45 years old and currently lives in Switzerland. He has lived and worked in The Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Switzerland and the USA. His stewardship of Sulzer has demonstrated Ton’s track record in leadership, strategy development, growth management and operational improvements.
