sad as it is, but it can happen to anybody: to lose one's roof over one’s head and become homeless. due to the economic downturn, resulting in higher than average unemployment, the homeless population has increased substantially in the past few years in many parts of the world. although most people only hear or read about the statistics and rarely, if ever, put a face to the dilemma, this is not the case for our us colleagues at powder coatings in nashville, where the site/office is located in an area of the city where homelessness is prevalent. as kathy wilson puts it: ‘we can’t come to work each day, go out to lunch, or drive home without coming face to face with individuals living on the streets and facing the struggles in life that homelessness brings.’ when the key alliance made an appeal for volunteers to assist during a one-day annual event for the homeless, more than 15% of the powder coatings workforce responded, with representation from every department. key alliance is one of the local non-profit organizations that make it their mission to assist the homeless in overcoming the barriers that keep them from securing housing and re-entering the general community in a productive way. every year the project homeless connect event is organized where people experiencing homelessness are provided access to a broad range of services including medical and foot care, legal services, contact with lost family members, food, shoes and haircuts, just to mention a f
sustainable business: creating business value through products and solutions which provide functionality and other sustainability benefits, as well as cost savings through operational efficiencies. target: to achieve 20 percent of our revenue from eco-premium solutions that have a downstream sustainability benefit by 2020. resource efficiency index (rei) is our new indicator measuring how efficiently we generate value, expressed as gross margin divided by cradle-to-grave carbon footprint. by using these two metrics which both relate business performance to environmental performance we are clearly making the point that, to akzonobel, ‘business is sustainability and sustainability is business.’ resource efficiency: accelerating material and energy efficiency across the value chain. target: to reduce the cradle-to-grave carbon footprint per ton of sales by 25–30 percent, from 2012 to 2020. capable, engaged people: engaging our people and partnering with our suppliers and customers to deliver significant changes. targets: to achieve an employee engagement score greater than 4 out of 5 (2015) as measured by gallup q12. these targets are underpinned by strong programs for health, safety and environment (hse), product stewardship, employee practices, community involvement, environmental management and our code of conduct.

there are numerous structures that require thermal and/or acoustic insulation. there is obvious value in insulation of living spaces but thermal insulation is also required to keep hot liquids hot, for example in chemical plants and during oil extraction. keeping structures cold is also a valued function in terms of fire protection typically, mineral wool cladding, e.g. rockwool™ is used at thicknesses of approximately 5 – 20 cm. coatings with insulation characteristics are available but are usually thinly applied and do not match the performance of mineral wool insulating materials rely on low conductivity to heat (and in some cases, noise). the materials physics means that (for a given technology) performance is a function of the thickness applied: more = better reducing thermal conductivity means containing inclusions of low conductivity (such as air, vacuum, other gas), and minimising the routes for thermal transport around these inclusions (high loading of the low conductivity material, thin walls to the foam, etc.) reducing noise relies on incorporating materials that can absorb sound energy and dissipate this energy as heat. these are often elastomeric materials or inclusions we seek technologies that can be incorporated in a coating composition, mastic or filler to yield performance as good, or better, than mineral wool a system that can be rapidly applied to complex shapes is preferred. application by airle

renovationas part of the renovation, akzonobel helped to develop a color palette (known as the sikkens rijks colors) which closely matched the paint originally used by architect pierre cuypers when the museum opened in 1885. as a result, the main building’s wall and ceiling decorations have now been returned to their former glory. sikkens products have also been used on the exterior, with a total of 8,000 liters of paint being supplied.the sikkens rijks colors have been launched in the netherlands, where they are now available to buy and use in your own home. there are also plans to launch the range in other regions. in the meantime, if you live outside the netherlands and are interested, please use contact us.to view the interior of the newly restored rijksmuseum and discover more about akzonobel's color expertise watch the video below.cultural heritagethe prestigious partnership highlights the vital contribution that akzonobel is making to protecting some of the world's most important landmarks while preserving its cultural heritage. this is further emphasized by the fact that in may 2013, akzonobel and the rijksmuseum signed a new five-year partnership agreement whereby the company sponsors two phd students from the museum's prestigious restoration lab. the partnership will move from color restoration to color conservation, with the two students focusing on titanium dioxide white in modern artwork and conservation materials, and the degradation of ultramarine bl

in spain, the number of people in need of support from a food bank is growing substantially caused by the economic crisis. near the packaging coatings operations in vilafranca, a volunteers association has been active for many years to supply people without resources with the essential and basic needs. the current economic recession has caused the number of needy people to increase. the level of unemployment in the region with a population of about 46,000 people is now around 20% and there are more than 100 families at the risk of social exclusion. the activities carried out by the association range from the collection of clothing and food to the organization of workshops and social events. the association’s aim is twofold: helping the needy and fostering the voluntary enlistment among the entire community. caused by the economic crisis there is an increasing number of people without resources that are badly in need of food. to that end a food bank was created in april 2012 under the name ‘som solidaris’ (we are solidary). the initiators were a former mayor and 17 other retired residents. andres salido and josep anton avila from packaging coatings had heard of this initiative and decided to contact the group to see if they could be of any help. they then learned that the food bank was limited to the distribution of ‘dry food’ (basic products such as cereals, olive oil, pasta, milk powder, etc.) from donations by shops and individuals as there were no ade
the tianjin disabled community was consulted and they pointed our colleagues at the intelligence challenged school of hongqiao district. a visit was paid to the school and after talking to the teachers and meeting the mentally and physically disabled children they had made their choice and requested support from the community program. the selected school was established for intelligence challenged children, and has been providing diverse training classes. there are 114 children, ranging from 7 to 22 years old attending the school. the teachers are not only teaching general courses, but also help the children to energetically overcome their physical and mental defects through a recovering exercise system. for some older youngsters who graduated from school, but still have not succeeded to earn a living, vocational training is provided by teaching them china-carving as well as helping them to get orders from enterprises and society. after several visits to the school, the polymer chemicals employees concluded that the children are being taken very good care of. however, they found out that the school facilities are quite old and lagged behind current study needs for disabled children. advanced equipment was needed to stimulate their sensory perception in order to reinforce their understanding and open up their minds. with the funds from the community program, an lcd screen was bought as well as an electronic white board, a beamer and a multi media control platform

by helping to establish educational quarters for the joão paulo ii home, our colleagues from pulp & paper chemicals (eka) in bahia, brazil were certainly ’on the right track’. this is also the title of a corporate program, directed at preventing the exploitation of poor children between 7 and 17 years old who perform work on the roads, which was co-signed by the akzonobel operation in bahia. at the occasion of a community meeting, one of the eka employees got in touch with a representative from the joão paulo ii home and heard about the poor conditions of the institution. this institution works with a group of 70 socially vulnerable children, developing activities to reinforce teaching at school during their available time, and also improve their health by providing food. the problems in the neighborhood are numerous: there is no sewer, the streets are unpaved and the families experience issues such as health problems, starvation, unemployment, drug usage and drug dealing. many families have no fixed income living through informal work or family’s allowance programs. our colleague recognized that help was urgently needed and asked for support from the community program. he convinced 90% of the total workforce as well as some contractors to get involved and a plan of action was made. one of the first actions was helping with the acquisition and design of the house joão paulo ii, located along the br 367 road. subsequently computer equipment was purchased and
