the hardest winter in 14 years delayed the plans of our colleagues from industrial chemicals in mariager, denmark to help the children of the nearby villages by creating a new playground. but the delay of 5-6 months did not discourage the small team of enthusiastic employees and two plant managers to realize their idea in the spring. when the mariager site management heard that the municipality of mariager fjord could not build new playgrounds for a long time because of a significant deficit, they contacted the authorities and together found a solution. support from the community program was requested and granted and the plan was to finance as well as build a playground, and upon completion, transfer its ownership and maintenance to the municipality. planning activities, including getting the necessary permits, as well as purchasing were started in october. the actual digging was foreseen for november, but although the winter of 2009/2010 became a very good season for the salt plant, it also totally disturbed the planning for the whole playground project. it took until late april when the soil was warm enough to start digging. after the official kick-off by the site manager and a representative of the municipality, a team set off with the task to prepare the ground and another team started the task of constructing all play equipment to be installed. to the surprise of many it was not easy at all to construct the equipment. there was a huge pile of manuals, laws
r&d project manager, global exterior wall expertise and research group in singapore 34-year old cedric bruel has only had one employer – akzonobel – in his career, but that doesn’t mean it’s been a dull. cedric, who grew up near paris, completed his studies in chemistry and chemical engineering in 2004 with a master’s degree and joined akzonobel shortly afterward. from 2005 until 2013, he worked at akzonobel’s product development center wall paint for europe in montataire, france, beginning as a chemical engineer and gradually taking on more and more managerial responsibility. then in 2013, life changed quite dramatically for cedric when he was transferred to singapore as r&d project manager for the company’s global exterior wall expertise and research group. “i was hoping to get an assignment abroad, mainly to face new challenges,” cedric explains. he let his managers know he was open to a transfer, and they suggested he apply for a position in singapore. “i’m still in charge of exterior wall paints in this job,” says cedric, “but now i have a global role, and i’m more involved in research and innovation. our challenge is to develop a new platform of technologies that we can then transfer and implement in the different regions. the main focus is on improving the durability of the products, but we are also looking to add new and innovative functionalities like the energy efficiency that we delivered with our ‘keep cool
one of the neighbors of the pulp & paper chemicals (eka) operations at the suzhou industrial park, the boai school & rehabilitation clinic, is near to the hearts of our colleagues.the boai school is a non-state, non-profit, registered charity organization set up in 1998. it takes care of vulnerable children who have been segregated from social life because of their disability. a group of 20 disabled children, who have been abandoned by their parents, permanently live at the school premises. apart from receiving pre-school and junior high school education, they are also given the required treatment for their disabilities. when leif sun, health safety & environment manager of eka heard that a hearing language recovery instrument was urgently needed, he consulted with his colleagues and they agreed that they would help their neighbors. they paid a visit to the boai school and noticed many more needs, like more exercise facilities making the right physiotherapy possible but above all care and attention for the children. support from the community program was granted and a group of 36 volunteers was formed. one day in september the volunteers, including their families, went out to give a helping hand to boai, such as in housekeeping and in assisting the children with certain activities. first they had purchased the hearing rehabilitation instrument as well as lego toys that help the children with their coordination. the toys bricks are the children’s favorite game and

twice a week three colleagues from automotive & aerospace coatings in asago, near milan in italy spend their evening at the nearby association amici contro la droga (friends against drugs) center. from 9 to 12 pm they help this non-profit organization with the preparation of drug prevention sessions at schools by writing reports, making power point presentations, cleaning the center, etc. during the year various events take place throughout weekends where our volunteers help by collecting donations as well as by transporting other volunteers - mostly professional doctors and psychologists - and materials to these venues, using their own cars. amici contro la droga has been actively engaged in the recovery of people suffering from a wide range of addictions since 2001. many people, mainly addicted to drugs and to gambling, have been helped to regain a normal way of living. one of the aims of the association is the dissemination of drug prevention messages among the younger generation mainly in high schools, oratories and block parties to combat the spreading of psychotropic agents such as alcohol and drugs. several projects have been put in place together with collaborating institutions often self-financing in order to get the message of a drug free life across. our colleagues from automotive & aerospace coatings had heard about the prevention work for young people by amici contro la droga and with the akzonobel life saving rules policy in mind, they decided to make

what seemed to be a very good idea, turned out to be more complicated to realize than originally planned. thanks to the persistence and commitment of our volunteering colleagues from pulp and performance chemicals (eka) in jundiaí, brazil poor women are now trained how to grow and prepare healthy food.it all began when ppc employee andreia faria told her colleagues about her volunteering work for almamater, a non profit organization which supports deprived children at the herculano pires center in vila maringa, a village near the site’s operations. she and the other volunteers came to the conclusion that the mothers of these children should also be involved in creating better living circumstances in a sustainable way. since the afternoons on which the children were being occupied at the center were now free for the mothers, a suitable project should be found. this is how the idea of organizing a sustainable workshop on the recycling and more effective use of food as well as giving guidance on healthy nutrition originated.the idea evaluated gradually into the creation of a community garden, where the women would learn how to grow vegetables, maintain the garden and use recycled left-over food. by giving lectures the needy women in the whole region could get training on how to make nutritious food using all parts of the vegetables and fruits grown in their ‘own’ garden.andreia managed to encourage almost 20 colleagues to participate in the project and support from th

big data solution gives shipping industry a powerful toolinteract vision is the very first digital tool specifically designed to give the shipping industry a way to accurately predict the potential fuel and co2 savings offered by fouling control coatings. fouling is a normal occurrence on all ships, and heavy fouling can have a serious impact on fuel efficiency and operational costs.intertrac vision can actually project how a coatings technology will perform on a ship hull before the coating is even applied. it works by analyzing factors such as hull roughness. the "roughness" associated with bio-fouling, and computational fluid dynamic studies carried out on different hull types. this vessel-specific information is then processed using proprietary algorithms to provide an accurate assessment of the impact of each potential fouling control coating choice, including a full cost-benefit analysis.with that information, ship operators can make informed decisions about when to apply fouling control coatings and what technology makes the best sense for them. it’s an example of how akzonobel is exploiting information technologies to deliver more to its coatings customers. and by helping shippers increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption it’s also an innovation that can be used to reduce the shipping industry’s environmental footprint.
