Making paint more efficient

Find out why we’re developing products that do more with less

Doing more with less isn’t a concept that’s usually associated with paints and coatings. How do you use less paint, but get more out of it?

By applying fewer coats.

Many of our recent innovations have focused on reducing the number of coats that customers need to apply – without compromising on quality. It’s an approach that offers a number of benefits, such as saving time, cutting costs and having a positive impact on the environment.

Product innovation

Two of the newest products we’ve developed have been launched in Indonesia. Dulux Professional Interior Express 2-in-1 was the country’s first two-in-one innovation in interior paint products. The trailblazing product can save 33% on costs and 33% on time, as well as offering a 13% carbon footprint reduction.

We also introduced Dulux Catylac Interior 2-in-1 for Indonesia’s retail segment. It enables consumers to paint without a sealer layer, yet still achieve the same quality as the conventional three-coat system. This helps save up to 30% in time and 22% in paint usage.

Innovation is often about responding to – or anticipating – market needs, and the launch of Chartek® ONE in China and Indonesia was strongly influenced by market demand.

Developed by our Marine and Protective Coatings business, the groundbreaking epoxy intumescent fire protection coating is a single-coat, 100% mesh-free solution. It can achieve a reduction in workshop hours of up to 59%, while ensuring reliable performance for pool and jet fires for up to three hours.

Also in response to market demand, our Yacht Coatings business introduced Awlgrip® Gloss Finish Primer, a time-saving product for the superyacht market. It combines a high-performance primer with a show coat in one, answering the industry's need for faster turnaround times, reduced material use and superior results.

Meanwhile, our Wood Coatings business recently embraced the two-in-one approach with One Coat Woodstain, which was launched by our CetaBever and Xyladecor brands in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Renewable materials

Thanks to its thick texture and rich palette of deep colors, the new formula – made with around 69% renewable materials – delivers a flawless finish while helping to reduce environmental impact.

And finally, it’s back to Asia. Our Dulux Professional Weathershield Express two-coat system for exteriors has been specified for use on all new Housing and Development Board apartments built in Singapore.

The product has been proven to increase productivity by up to 30% (compared with three-coat systems), resulting in time savings of up to 20% and material consumption reductions of up to 15%. An estimated 50,000 apartments will have been created by the end of 2025.
