The Race Is On

Akzo Nobel’s International Paint business is once again sponsoring one of the world’s biggest yacht races.

Staged annually off the south coast of England, the popular Round the Island Race draws entries from every class of sailing craft for the 55-mile chase around the Isle of Wight.

“The race attracts all levels of competitors from racing professionals to families taking part for fun,” explained Boris Webber, UK sales support manager for International Paint.

This year’s competition, the 68th in the event’s history, is being held on June 26, when French sailor Francis Joyon—who shattered the solo, round-the-world record—will be among those taking part.

His boat was also the first vessel home in last year’s Round the Island Race in a time of just over 4 hours 5 minutes.

The race itself—which was launched this year at January’s London Boat Show—is the third largest participation event of its kind in the UK, after the London Marathon and the Great North Run. Nearly 2,000 yachts and 12,000 sailors will compete this weekend.

“As the UK's number one supplier of quality yacht paint for 100 years, International Paint is proud to be involved with the Round the Island Race,” added Webber. “With a number of competitors choosing our products to protect and beautify their boats, it is a fitting way to get closer to our customers."
