Find out how we’re protecting Asia’s largest wind farm

Just off the coast of Rudong county in Jiangsu province, China, sits the largest operational offshore wind farm in Asia. There are 70 turbines, capable of producing in excess of 900 million kWh of electricity a year.

It’s an epic project, now in commercial operation, which required the kind of expertise that only a global market leader in the protection of offshore wind farms could provide – we supply more than 60% of the world’s offshore wind farms* – so that’s where we came in.

In fact, we’ve been a major supplier to China’s clean energy sector for some time, proudly contributing to both the State Power Investment Corporation’s Dafeng H3 wind farm project, and the China-Guangzhou Nuclear Group’s Shanwei Houhu offshore wind farm project, as well as China’s first large scale offshore wind farm at Donghai Bridge.

Building on these high profile projects (China is the third largest offshore wind power producer in the world), many of the turbine towers at the new Huaneng Rudong offshore wind farm are now protected with advanced anti-corrosion coatings from our International range, which are specially designed for offshore performance.

Two of the wind farm’s booster stations are also protected by our coatings. International’s Chartek products were selected to provide passive fire protection to the giant structures, which collect, maximize and transmit power generated by the turbines.

“We’re proud to help our customers protect their investment at the Huaneng Rudong offshore wind farm project and also achieve their own sustainability objectives,” explains Amanda Sheng, Regional Commercial Director for our Marine and Protective Coatings business in Greater China. “As a pioneer in providing protective coatings and solutions with proven performance, we will continue to provide the highest standard of protection and sustainable technologies to China’s clean energy industry.”

As a company that sets the standard for supplying sustainable paints and coatings, AkzoNobel has adopted a holistic approach to sustainability, known as People. Planet. Paint. This is reflected in the protection we provide to wind farms through the use of products with a sustainability benefit. Applying these durable products not only helps owners extend the period of time to first major maintenance, it also reduces the cost of bringing clean energy to thousands of homes and businesses.

Offshore wind assets and machinery have to be capable of withstanding the harsh marine environment, with constant moisture, salt and abrasion creating extremely aggressive environmental challenges. Thanks to its extremely low water absorption properties, our Interzone technology provides extreme protection. As well as offering excellent anti-corrosive performance, it’s also highly resistant to impact and abrasion from seaborne debris and natural forces.
