The Stewardship Award is presented to those shippers who successfully transported a minimum of 500 loaded tankcars of hazardous materials during the 1999 calendar year and who worked with their customers to ensure no non-accident releases (NARs) occurred during the entire transportation cycle. The majority of Akzo Nobel Chemicals rail traffic, moving across BNSF’s rail lines, originates at LeMoyne, AL (business unit Functional Chemicals).
was the third consecutive year that Akzo Nobel Chemicals Inc. won the BNSF Stewardship Award.
NARs are releases of hazardous materials that typically result from improper tankcar securement, loading or train handling. NARs account for more than 90 percent of all hazardous materials released in the rail industry annually. Additionally, they can affect the health fo rail employees and the general public, cause environmental damage and create operational disruptions, which result in delays to other customers’ freight.
