International Marine Coatings has clinched a major contract to coat the first ever Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) carriers to be built in China.
More than two million liters of paint—including Intersmooth® 465 and Intershield® 300—will be used to coat the four vessels, being constructed by the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. Ltd in Shanghai.
The ships will be used to transport gas from Australia to China, with the first vessel—which began construction late last year—expected to be delivered in July 2007. The other three will be delivered by November 2008.
The contract, which is the culmination of three years’ hard work on behalf of International Paint, involved a significant team effort, with personnel from IP offices in Shanghai, France, the UK, Japan and Korea all involved at some stage.
“This is tremendous news,” said Jorn Seiero, former General Manager of IP Shanghai. “This will firmly place China and IP Shanghai on the global newbuilding map. I’m convinced this will become one of the milestones in the company’s history.”
Added new General Manager of IP Shanghai, Aidan Metcalfe: “This is a great example of inter-regional cooperation.”
