The annual Akzo Nobel Coatings HSE Award has been presented to the company’s Interpon® Powder Coatings site in Izmir, Turkey.
It’s the second year in a row that the honor has gone to a Turkish site following the success of Gebze 12 months ago.
Izmir—which has been operational for less than three years (production started in 2000)—was praised by Rudy van der Meer, the Akzo Nobel board member responsible for the Coatings group, for its outstanding HSE performance.
The site received an 86 percent audit rating for 2002, which was described by Van Der Meer as “remarkable” for a new site.
A number of full HSE management systems have been established, such as the ISO 9001:2000 certified quality management system. The environmental management system ISO 14001 is also scheduled for this year.
Other factors which swayed the decision in Izmir’s favor were the high degree of management commitment and involvement at the site, along with its strong program of HSE training and instruction.
The prize of EUR 100,000—to be spent on HSE-related activities—was accepted by Powder Coatings BU manager, Bill McPherson on behalf of local Turkish general manager Eyup Altan. He received the prize at Akzo Nobel’s annual Coatings Conference, which was held in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.
The Izmir site beat off strong competition from a number of entries, with the quality of applications this year being extremely high. Special mentions were given to the Marine & Protective Coatings site in Sao Goncalo, Brazil, and the Interpon Powder Coatings facility in Shiwa, Korea.
