New Equipment Speeds Up Product Development

New equipment installed by Akzo Nobel's Plastics and Processing Additives business in the UK is helping to speed up product development.

New testing and measuring equipment installed by Akzo Nobel’s Plastics and Processing Additives business, Akcros Chemicals, will help to speed up product development and improve customer service.

The business unit’s headquarters, based at Eccles near Manchester in the UK, has invested in a new Collin Measuring Mill and a Brabender LabStation, which will result in significant benefits, according to the site R&D Manager, Dr Malcolm Mellor.

“Our new equipment is a major investment in technical support and product development capabilities that we offer to our major customers throughout the world,” he said.

“By helping us to match more precisely their technical requirements, the equipment operated by our trained staff will lead to a higher level response in targeting solutions to match the objectives of our customers.”

The state-of-the-art Brabender LabStation is providing more comprehensive test data on polymer melt viscosity, gelation performance and the extrusion characteristics of flexible and rigid PVC compounds.

The Collin Measuring Mill has given increased levels of processing information for flexible and rigid clear PVC calendaring operations, as well as software programs for improving test reproducibility and the measurement of dynamic heat stability.

Added Dr Mellor: “It can also measure nip pressures, roll torque and bowl release—giving an indication of the lubrication characteristics of our range of PVC process additives.”
