Sikkens Shines in Solar Race

A space-age, solar-powered vehicle coated by Akzo Nobel has helped a Dutch racing team to win a major competition—and smash its own world record—for the third consecutive time.

Nuna 3, which is coated with Sikkens products, won the World Solar Challenge staged in Australia this week, covering the 3,021 kilometer distance from Darwin to Adelaide in 29 hours 11 minutes.

by the Nuon Solar Team, the car’s finishing time was nearly two hours quicker than the team’s previous world best in 2003—achieved by Nuna 2—and more than three hours faster than the 2001 record set by Nuna.

year’s eighth staging of the long distance event attracted a field of 22 cars, although none could compete with Nuna 3, which broke the 100 kph average speed barrier for the first time in the race’s history.

as the ultimate challenge in sustainable energy, the aim of the competition is to stimulate research and development into harnessing solar energy for future transport needs.
